Sand Salt Water Taffy

In August 2000 this was the entry B-Crafty and her sons built for the Ocean City, NJ. sand sculpture contest.  The timing coincided with the political convention in Philadelphia, so the signage B-Crafty made for the beach was “Vote for your Favorite Flavor”.

Issue #89

Occasion: Beach Time

Category: Sand Sculpting

Materials Needed:

  • Sandy beach
  • Bucket and shovel
  • Various favored Jell-O packages for the taffy colors
  • Parchment paper
  • Imagination

Instructions:

The first order of business for the building is to make a huge rectangular box shape. When you get it constructed then you add the taffy on top. Use the Jell-O packages to sprinkle on the sand salt water taffy. Once you finish with the Jell-O coloring, place a scrunched up piece of parchment paper at the ends of the taffy to resemble the wrapper.

B-Crafty Tip: B-Crafty prepared the parchment paper ends before she went to the beach by using a rubber band to hold the scrunched in end. Then she shoved it gently into the sand at the ends of each taffy.
