Who knew that Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie were perfect to build in the sand, complete with seashells for their eyes and seaweed for their hair and Bert’s eyebrows! B-Crafty, her son’s and Devon neighbor Allison and her son Clarke created this in August 2001 in Ocean City, NJ’s sand sculpture contest. The sign for this creation read “Brought to you by the letters OCNJ”.

Issue #90
Occasion: Beach Time
Category: Sand Sculpting
Materials Needed:
- Sandy beach
- Bucket and shovel
- Lemon, orange and cherry favored Jell-O packages
- Seashells and seaweed
- Imagination

Instructions:
The first task for the building this one is to make a huge pile of sand to be the surface that the Bert and Ernie will be sculpted on. The reason you do this is to make sure that the sculpture is visible from the front and not just laying flat on the sand where the only way to view it is when you are standing over it. Once the faces are complete, color Ernie with the orange Jell-O, and red nose and Bert with the yellow Jell-O and an orange nose. Then add the shells and seaweed.
B-Crafty Tip: B-Crafty collects the white clam shells ahead of time and paints the black part of the eyes before she comes to the beach to build.
