This special B-Crafty “Sand Birthday Cake” celebrated in 2009 the 13th year she and her family participated in the OCNJ Sand Sculpting Contest. This was their final year of competition but the family has been building every year ever. The “icing on the cake” was that this entry won first place in the contest!

Name: Sand Birthday Cake
Issue #188
Occasion: Beach Time
Category: Sand Sculpting
Materials Needed:
- Sandy beach
- Bucket and shovel
- Various flavored Jell-O, including berry, and raspberry
- Empty paper towel rolls
- Blue acrylic paint
- Yellow felt or construction paper

Instructions:
- Prior to going to the beach paint the paper towel rolls
- Cut out flame shapes in the yellow felt/construction paper
- Attach the flames to the paper towel rolls.
- The key for this sculpture is to make the pile of sand tall enough to make two layers
- Start sculpting the top layer and the icing on it. Then move to the bottom layer.
- The icing on both layers is dusted with the powdered raspberry Jell-O.
- The final touch is the line of decoration at the base. Rather than sculpting that decoration line you should just use clumps of wet sand.
- Once completed dust the decoration at the base with the berry Jell-O.
B-Crafty Tip: One added fun aspect of the annual builds by B-Crafty’s family is the themed T-shirts they all wear. Perfect to build in and to keep as a memory.

Congratulations on winning! It truly is special. I assume lots of beach goers came to see it.
